OBD code P0001

The ECU is not receiving a correct signal from the regulator that controls fuel flow to the pump or rail.

Estimated severity
High
Common symptoms
  • Hard starting or no start
  • Power loss when accelerating or climbing hills
  • Limp mode
  • Engine cuts out intermittently
  • Related fuel-pressure codes such as P0087 or P0191
Likely causes
  • Faulty fuel volume regulator or metering valve
  • Open circuit or damaged wiring
  • Loose, wet or corroded connector
  • Power supply or ground fault
  • Internal high-pressure pump issue
Recommended checks
  1. 1. Read all stored codes and check whether low or high fuel-pressure codes are also present.
  2. 2. Inspect the regulator connector and wiring harness around the fuel pump.
  3. 3. Check power supply, ground and continuity according to manufacturer data.
  4. 4. Compare requested and actual fuel pressure while cranking and under light load.
  5. 5. Do not replace the high-pressure pump until the regulator circuit has been electrically checked.

What does code P0001 mean?

Code P0001 points to an electrical fault in the fuel volume regulator circuit. This regulator controls how much fuel is supplied to the high-pressure system. On modern diesel vans and common-rail engines, a failure here can cause hard starting, limp mode, poor acceleration or an engine that cuts out under load. It should not be treated as a minor sensor warning.
