OBD code P0234

Boost pressure is above the expected limit, and the ECU may cut power to protect the engine.

Estimated severity
High
Common symptoms
  • Limp mode under hard acceleration
  • A pull followed by sudden power loss
  • Abnormal turbo whistle
  • Dark smoke in some conditions
  • Fault may temporarily disappear after cycling the ignition
Likely causes
  • Variable-geometry turbo vanes sticking from carbon buildup
  • Faulty turbo actuator or boost control solenoid
  • Vacuum or pressure hoses incorrectly connected or damaged
  • MAP/boost sensor reading incorrectly
  • Poorly calibrated remap or mechanical modification
Recommended checks
  1. 1. Compare target and actual boost pressure with a scanner.
  2. 2. Inspect vacuum/pressure hoses and the boost control solenoid.
  3. 3. Check turbo actuator movement and make sure it is not sticking.
  4. 4. Inspect the MAP sensor and intake pipes.
  5. 5. Do not just clear the code if limp mode returns under load.

What does code P0234 mean?

P0234 indicates a turbo overboost condition. It is common on diesel engines with variable-geometry turbos when the actuator, control solenoid or vanes stick. It may also appear because of incorrect MAP/boost sensor readings or faulty vacuum control hoses. Ignoring it can damage the turbo, engine or intake system.
